Fr. Rafael Garcia, SJ
Fr. Garcia has been pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, in El Paso, TX, since 2016 after previously serving as the pastor there for 13 years. The church is only a few blocks from the border with Mexico and has served as a refuge and place of ministry for migrants throughout its existence. Fr. Garcia also ministers at the area detention centers for migrants. He, himself, came to the U.S. from Cuba when he was only 9 years old.

Heidi Cerneka
Heidi Cerneka is a Maryknoll Lay Missioner and attorney who has served in El Paso, TX, for more than 6 years, as well as with incarcerated women in Brazil and Kenya for almost 20 years as a Lay Missioner. Her current ministry includes immigration advocacy through the Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center (in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez) with survivors of human trafficking and other crimes who qualify for relief from deportation under U.S. laws designed to protect victims of crimes. She also works in education and advocacy around human trafficking policies and issues, including a project in Brazil for survivors of human trafficking for purposes of forced crime.
